Matthew Hawke is a theoretical physicist from the year 2045. He’s not just any scientist, though—he’s the genius who cracked the code of time travel. His groundbreaking research on quantum entanglement and temporal bridges led to the creation of a time machine. But, like all great inventions, it came with significant risks. Matthew knew that time travel could disrupt the timeline, creating paradoxes that could be catastrophic.

Ultimately, Alexander/Matthew’s story is one of redemption, love, and the heavy burden of knowledge.  His dual  identity makes him one of the most intriguing characters in Echoes of a Distant Time, as he embodies the clash between past and future, science and emotion, destiny and free will.

Background

Personality

Matthew Hawke, known as Alexander, is a character defined by his brilliant intellect and the weight of his past. As a theoretical physicist from the future, his mind is always in motion, constantly analyzing and problem-solving. This sharp intelligence makes him a forward-thinker, often several steps ahead in any given situation. However, his scientific mind is not just a source of strength but also a burden, as it keeps him acutely aware of the consequences of his actions, particularly the dangers of time travel. This awareness, combined with his deep-seated grief over the loss of his wife, Emma, leaves him in a state of perpetual conflict, torn between his sense of duty and his emotional scars.

Despite his intellectual prowess, Matthew is a man of profound emotional depth. The loss of Emma haunts him, driving many of his actions and decisions. This grief makes him both determined and vulnerable, pushing him to protect those he cares about while also isolating him in his sorrow. His growing feelings for Lucy only add to this internal struggle, as he battles between honouring his past and embracing a new future. Compassionate yet reserved, Matthew’s actions often speak louder than words, revealing a man who, despite his pain, still deeply cares for others and quietly works to make a difference in the world around him. This combination of intellect, emotional turmoil, and compassion makes Matthew a richly complex character, one who embodies the tension between love, loss, and the relentless passage of time.
